The first Hagerty Race Day at the 63rd running of the Mission Foods SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® at Road America concluded with a Touring 2 (T2) race that saw Tire Rack Pole winner Northwest Region’s Scotty B. White convert the pole into victory in his No. 0 Knight Transport/Hoosier/Xtreme CMT 2023 Ford Mustang.
White had experienced quite a morning, having been disqualified from the Touring 3 race earlier in the day. For the better part of three decades, White has chased a Runoffs win, with the title often slipping through his fingers at the last moment. He described his moment of redemption as going “from elation to depression and back to elation.”
White led the field to the opening green flag with Rylan Hazelton’s Honda Civic TCR to his left, but the pony car galloped away from its petite pursuer, pulling a 2.4sec lead after the opening lap.
Hazelton’s Civic was being harangued by William Bolt’s No. 199 Hoosier/Carbotech/Bolt Racing Chevrolet Corvette C6 GS, and on the third lap, Bolt slipped through to second. The Corvette C5s of Robert Weston and Josh Carroll ran fourth and fifth, but the gaps were closed when a full-course caution flew on that third lap due to debris from opening-lap accidents that removed Alan Kossof, Robert Wellington, and Aaron Kaplan from the race.
With six laps run, the field took the green flag once more, with Bolt tucked under White’s rear wing, but the leader’s advantage was secure. Hazelton’s Civic, with its small displacement, got swamped by V8 torque, with Carroll’s No. 35 Endsight Chevrolet Corvette C5 Z06 claiming third, and Weston, in another Corvette, filling the Honda’s mirrors.
Initially, Bolt wouldn’t let White go, and the pair swiftly gained more than four seconds advantage over Carroll, who wasn’t shaking off Hazelton and Weston. But on the second lap after the restart, Bolt had a slow lap that cost him almost two seconds.
The main attention turned to the Goliath vs. David battle for third between Carroll and Hazelton. The Corvette stretched away with horsepower on the straights, the Civic clawed back the deficit whenever the road turned or heavy braking was required.
Unfortunately, it was under heavy braking for Turn 5 with two laps to go that Hazelton dropped his right-side wheels onto the curb, inevitably losing some stopping power and going the long way into the runoff zone. That ended Hazelton’s hopes of a podium and allowed the charging Weston into fourth. Weston was within a second of Carroll at the checkered flag despite the latter running his fastest lap on the final tour of the 4.048-mile course.
Said the relieved Cal Club Region member Carroll: “It’s kind of amazing. I’ve been doing this for 20 years and I’ve never gotten a Runoffs National Championship podium. It’s my first time back since 2014, and I’m just blown away, honestly. Just speechless.”
Runner-up Bolt admitted afterward that he used up his tires too swiftly in his efforts to pressure White. “Scotty was so fast, I was just doing everything I could to keep up with him,” the Atlanta Region member said. “After the week we had getting this thing prepared, I’m so happy and thankful for the team, thankful for everything.
“She’s so much fun, she’s such a good-balanced car, sliding it is a lot of fun!”
Weston crossed the line in fourth, Hazelton recovered to finish fifth, and David Holmes rounded out the top six. Patrick Howe claimed the Sunoco Hard Charger award by moving from 19th on the grid to 10th at the checker.
